Wikimedia Australia is an independent, registered charitable organisation, recognised by the Wikimedia Foundation as an official chapter. Our aim is to promote participation on Wikimedia projects and the equality of opportunity to access and participate in the collaborative creation of free cultural works in Australia. We undertake outreach activities, develop resources and build systems that empower and engage people to collect, develop, share and promote free cultural works.
Formed in 2008, Wikimedia Australia held the first GLAM-WIKI in August 2009. This event brought together people from more then 50 Galleries, Libraries Archives and Museums from across Australia and New Zealand to share ideas on the free exchange of knowledge. Our major projects include working with the State Library of Queensland to upload over 20,000 images from their collection, Wikipedia editing workshops in libraries, a Wikimedian in Residence at the State Library of New South Wales in 2013, and WikiTowns projects in Fremantle and Toodyay, Western Australia.
